Everything You Need to Know About SME Advice and More!
Where can I find on-demand mentorship and business advice in South Africa?
SME Advice is the first on-demand virtual mentorship platform in South Africa where small businesses can connect with industry experts for business mentoring and advice.
How can I find video call sessions with Experts?
Your session history and upcoming sessions are easily accessible from your dashboard. Simply navigate to the "Sessions" tab located on the left-hand side. This will display all relevant information for past and future sessions.
How do I join a meeting?
Ensure your camera and microphone are accessible for calls.
- Allow access: Before joining your call, check if your browser has permission to use your camera and microphone.
- Select your device (if applicable): If you have multiple cameras or microphones, you can choose the preferred one from a dropdown menu during permission setup.
What happens after my session?
After your video call, you'll have the chance to rate and review your Expert. You can also provide feedback on your overall platform experience.
What types of sessions are allowed?
There are two session types:
1. Once-off sessions allow mentors to host a one-on-one session in which they are the host and lead discussion or presentation. Only registered mentees can book these sessions with the mentors.
2. Subscriptions allow mentors to have a series of sessions in one package and mentees can schedule more than one session.
What is the maximum number of sessions I can book?
Mentees can book one session at a time with the mentor depending on the mentor's schedule. Mentor's calendar availability will determine how many sessions they will be able to take for each specific time.
Mentors will be able to put the allowed minutes on their once-off session, meeting packages.
Will my data be private and safe on SME Advice?
SME Advice is hosted on Amazon Web Services which protects web applications by filtering traffic based on the guidelines we’ve created and identifies threats regularly, by monitoring the network and account activity within our cloud environment so that clients' and users’ information and data is protected at all times.

How does the forum work?
The forum is where mentees can connect with experienced mentors, fellow entrepreneurs, and industry professionals to seek guidance, knowledge, and support for their entrepreneurial journey. Mentors can comment on the question and react by liking or disliking the question. Participation in the forum is optional for both mentors and mentees.

Can I take my sessions offline?
For security reasons and to maintain a positive experience for both Experts and Entrepreneurs, all sessions must take place within the SME Advice platform. This helps us ensure the safety and privacy of our users. If you conduct sessions outside the platform, you may be removed from the SME Advice mentor network.
Here's what this means for you:
- Convenience: Schedule, conduct, and manage your sessions directly through the platform.
- Security: Our platform has built-in features to keep your interactions safe and confidential.
- Quality Assurance: Using the platform allows us to monitor session quality and ensure a positive experience for everyone.
We understand you might prefer external channels for communication, but using the SME Advice platform ensures a secure and consistent experience for all.
How can I adjust my audio/video settings during a call?
you can manage your microphone, camera, screen sharing, and other meeting controls using the meeting toolbar. This toolbar appears by default at the bottom of your meeting window.
Here's a breakdown of the controls you'll typically find:
- Mute/Unmute Microphone: This button allows you to mute or unmute your microphone.
- Start/Stop Video: This button lets you turn your camera on or off.
- Share Screen: This button grants you access to share your entire screen or specific applications with others in the meeting.
- More Options: Clicking on the up arrow (^) provides additional controls, such as joining by phone, managing participants (if you're the host), recording the meeting, and accessing the chat.
Do you have a troubleshooting checklist?
Having trouble getting your video call working on SME Advice? Don't worry, these tips should help you troubleshoot the issue:
- Check Your Permissions: Make sure your browser has access to your microphone and camera. You can usually adjust these settings in your browser's privacy or security options.
- Close Conflicting Applications: Other programs or browser tabs might be using your camera or microphone in the background. Close any unnecessary applications before starting your video call.
- Verify Microphone/Camera Settings (Internal): If your camera and microphone are built into your device (like on a laptop), check your System Preferences (Mac) or Settings (PC) to ensure they're properly selected as the input and output devices.
- Restricted Work Laptop: If you're using a work computer, your company's IT policies might restrict access to the camera or microphone. In this case, consider joining the video call from a personal device if possible.
By following these steps, you should be able to get your video calls working smoothly on SME Advice. If you're still having trouble, contact SME Advice support for further assistance.
